One of the my most enjoyable and unique experiences of Lake Como is traveling between the many towns by ferry boats. Compared to trains or buses, I’ll take the boat any time. While the boats don’t stop at all towns on the lake, and although the boats are slower and more expensive than a train or bus, the ride is smoother, more relaxing and the views are to die for. Plus, you have a choice of riding inside or outside.
On the ferry ride from Varenna to Gravedona which is located on the northern end of the lake, we passed through a throng of sailboats, windsurfers, and kite surfers. Apparently there is only a small area of the lake where the winds are strong and constant which would explain why there were so many of them in this one small area. Seriously, I was amazed that they were not running on top of each other, but, it was apparent everyone knew what they were doing and we passed through them without any problem. It was quite a sight to watch as the windsurfers and kite surfers skipped and hopped around each other like around like a school of frolicking porpoises.

Jacquie and I love the wonderful photos on your blog as we’re preparing to leave for the South of France on September 1st for three months. We need to think about visiting Lake Como again, as it’s been over 35 years since we were traveling in Italy in our VW camper, the most memorable and enjoyable time of our life!

  2. Thanks Bob. By the way, I am thinking about 5 weeks in France next (2016) September/October, maybe I can drop by if you are there. A few more blogs on Lake Como to come soon.

  3. Hi Gary. I haven’t heard from you for a while. Hope all is well.
